An Import Export Code (IEC) is not mandatory, unless the service provider seeks to avail benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which falls under the Ministry of Commerce of the Government of India, issues the Import Export Code (IEC) in electronic form (e-IEC).
The latest version of the portal is compatible with Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Apple Safari.
An Import Export Code (IEC) assigned to an applicant will be valid permanently, but it is mandatory to update it annually to avoid deactivation. If the IEC is updated during the period of April to June each year, no fee will be charged for the update.
If the IEC is not updated within the specified time, it will be deactivated. The deactivated IEC can be reactivated upon successful updating, but this action will not prejudice any other measures taken for violation of other provisions of the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP).
